What we're looking for
What The Denmark is seeking talented, curious people interested in communicating stories about Danish culture. You'll be working as part of a team to create a high quality podcast explaining things that seem peculiar about Denmark. This is a great opportunity to develop creative and management skills and be part of building an exciting national brand.
Responsibilities
The plan is for you to (eventually) take over responsibility for ensuring that podcast episodes (and other promotional content) get made to a really high standard. We see this is a process where you learn from the project leader (Sam) and then grow and shape the role in a way that fits you best.
Your main areas of responsibility:
- Project manage podcast episodes: multiple team members are involved in the creation of episodes (see How we make podcasts). Your job is to coordinate them, and ensure everything is to a high standard. As episodes progress, focus will shift from overseeing/ supporting the research, editing and then marketing of episodes
- Sort out when/ where recording will happen: we typically record in one of a few different hotels in Copenhagen and need to find a time that works for the hosts, the audio team, the guest and the hotel. This is a bit of a balancing act and requires proactivity (i.e. calling people up) to get a time and place confirmed in the calendar. You should also be able to be flexible/ not disheartened
if when plans have to change at the last minute
- Onboard and train team members: we have (and continue to develop) procedures and systems for training team members. The main type of team member you will work with is the Researcher. These are typically (aspiring) journalists who take the lead on researching an episode topic and then join Sam + Josefine in the studio. You will take them through our procedures for booking guests, conducting interviews, identifying audio snippets and script writing, as well as guiding/ sparring with them on the episodes they research
- Contribute to episode production: after a studio recording is over the Producer and Editor will take the lead on creating the final episode. You will oversee this process, ensure that other team members (including yourself) can give feedback to ensure the output is really high quality
- Fun/ random things: as the show continues to grow, the podcast will no doubt develop in unpredictable ways. You should be OK with (excited by?) the prospect of, for example, travelling in Denmark to work on stories, helping out on video production, arranging live events, and any other things that may occur as we grow the brand!
Characteristics
Must haves
- Extremely organised: you will be coordinating multiple team members and podcast episodes simultaneously. Keeping everything in your head/ writing it on paper doesn't work for a production like this. We use a project management tool (Asana) that you should learn to love
- Precise and helpful with giving feedback: you will working with people creating various content and should be the first person to give feedback to them before sharing with the rest of the team. Sending random thoughts over email in an unstructured way makes this process difficult and so you should be precise and deliberate in how you communicate
- A producer's ear: a pause that is half a second too long can ruin a podcast episode. Even though you won't need to be leading the production process, you should at least be able to have an opinion on when/ where/ why a music fade should start, and be able to communicate this with the producer and editor
- (Basically) fluent in Danish: as the role develops you will need to be speaking with various Danish people at Danish organisations. From experience, this is best done when communicating in the native language
- Excellent English: we're running an English speaking podcast. You don't need to be native (Sam + Josefine will do final tweaks to scripts) but you should be able to detect errors/ basic Danglish when working with researchers on their scripts
- Can be in Copenhagen 1-2 times/ month: we do studio recordings near København H Station. It would be great for you to come in when we do recordings
- You "get" the show: the podcast, and more broadly the brand, is all about making Denmark more integrated with wider world (whilst retaining the Danish charm). You should be aligned with our values
